When it comes to lessons in how to scale an MSP then the race to the South Pole can provide some great insight – even if from an unusual perspective! The battle between Scott and Amundsen is well documented and if you grew up in Britain you may have been left with the understanding that Scott of the Antarctic was a hero -  I know I was - and in terms of what he tried to achieve he was.

Over the years I’ve been working exclusively with the owners of MSP businesses, I’ve noticed that many of them have a lot of elements in common – especially around the shape of their business. What do I mean by that? I mean the number of owners or directors who make up the core of the business and are responsible for driving it forwards. Many MSPs have a single owner and director, who started the business from scratch. The next biggest proportion is MSPs with two directors – and again, these are split into two types

Do you ever get those flash of inspiration moments when you see everything really clearly? Or perhaps you get reminded of a fundamental belief you’ve always had but forgotten about it in the melee of life and business? I had such a moment the other week when running a whole day Intensive day with my MSP Mastery clients.  As they were working on the insights from the day to take back to their businesses, I realised that as well as all the things you need to focus on to grow an MSP there’s one fundamental everyone needs.  It’s mandatory and non-negotiable if you want to scale.

As we start to come out of lockdown; there is still a lot of uncertainty. People are talking about a ‘new normal’ with no clear idea of what that means for many businesses – what will the impact be when staff come back from furlough and longer-term plans can be made? Will project work restart or will the upturn be faster? Our work patterns as lockdown eases will be likely to look different and it looks as though remote working will be here to stay in some format for many businesses. The thing is, when considering something like this, there’s facts, fiction and then hype mixed with fear and given I’m no infection control specialist it feels really tricky so have had to boil it down to common sense.

It’s a real decision for me as I have UK wide and international travel planned in the next few weeks. Usually I wouldn’t even think about the risks, having worked all over the world for many years, however feel I need to consciously weigh up the risks of my travel. The thing is, when considering something like this, there’s facts, fiction and then hype mixed with fear and given I’m no infection control specialist it feels really tricky so have had to boil it down to common sense.

Most employees want to do a good job. They want to do well. They want to contribute to the success of the business. But how many times have you given your team projects to do that’ll improve the business or help it function better and all you hear is, "sorry, haven't had time. I’ve been swamped with xyz.”

Did you know that interest rates have been at an all-time 300 year low and have now been like this for nearly a decade? So what, I hear you say? The trouble is, us humans have remarkably short-term memories and most people are no doubt falling fowl to the anchoring effect. Broadly, this is where we tend to believe something must be consistently true because that’s what we’ve become used to i.e. low interest rates.
